Accelerate deployment of space-based missile tracking sensors

Partially done

Printed page 127 4. Department of Defense

“Accelerate the program to deploy space-based sensors that can detect and track missiles flying on nonballistic trajectories.”

What has happened

  1. Partially done

The FY2026 NDAA sec. 1604 extends the Space Development Agency's middle tier acquisition authority for the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture - the tracking layer - to Tranches 4, 5 and 6, three more tranches of satellites on the rapid-fielding pathway, and funds Ballistic Missile Defense System Space Programs at $97,061,000. Sec. 1607 requires a study on establishing a tactical surveillance, reconnaissance and tracking program of record. Acceleration authority and money, no fielded constellation on the record.

  2. Partially done

Section 20003(a) of the reconciliation act (P.L. 119-21) appropriated $7,200,000,000 for the development, procurement and integration of military space-based sensors and $2,000,000,000 for air moving target indicator military satellites - sensors for exactly the non-ballistic, manoeuvring and air-breathing tracks the Quote names. Section 20009 adds $150,000,000 for ground moving target indicator satellites and $528,000,000 for the DARC and SILENTBARKER space situational awareness programs.

Research notes

The Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor is not named in any enacted text in the window; the money is written as “military space-based sensors” and the tracking layer appears as the Space Development Agency’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. Recorded so the next pass searches on those.

  • Note the tension with #237, which reads the same sec. 1604 as Congress continuing the Space Development Agency’s fail-early tranche model. Both readings are correct on their own asks: the tranche extension accelerates deployment (this item) while entrenching the acquisition methodology (#237). Flagged for the consistency pass so the two are not leveled against each other by mistake.
