“Permanently authorize and make mandatory E-Verify; and”

What has happened

  1. Not started

Mandatory-E-Verify bills were introduced in both chambers and one narrower bill (federal contractors) was ordered reported in committee, but nothing has passed a chamber and no administration request was found. E-Verify remains voluntary and authorized by appropriations extensions.

No action found yet. This entry is the starting point, not a finding.

Research notes

  • H.R. 251 Legal Workforce Act (introduced 2025-01-09, referred to Judiciary, Ways and Means, Education and Workforce; no further action). S. 4620 Mandatory E-Verify Act of 2026 (introduced 2026-05-21, referred to Judiciary). H.R. 2641, requiring all federal contractors to use E-Verify, was ordered reported by House Judiciary 2026-01-08 (17–8) — committee action only. Bill titles and actions from the congress.gov API; texts not read. Under the Requires-Congress rule, introduction and committee markup are not started.
  • USCIS continues routine E-Verify information-collection notices (2026-04-16, 05-13, 05-18, 06-26, 08-19), i.e. the program runs as before.
  • Federal Register full-text: “E-Verify” mandatory “all employers” since 2025-01-20 → two unrelated DHS rules. No executive action mandating E-Verify for private employers.
