Reinstate the 2020 Alaska Roadless Rule for the Tongass National Forest
Printed page 531 16. Department of the Interior
“Reinstate President Trump’s 2020 Alaska Roadless Rule for the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, which was replaced by a Biden Roadless Rule that continues a 2001 Clinton rule affecting 9.37 million of the forest’s 16.7 million acres.”
What has happened
- Attempted
USDA published the proposed rule rescinding the 2001 Roadless Rule outright, with a draft environmental impact statement and cost-benefit analysis, "return[ing] decisionmaking for the management of inventoried roadless areas to the land management planning process at the individual national forest level". Still a proposal a week before this research; and it repeals the national rule rather than reinstating President Trump's 2020 Alaska Roadless Rule, which no document in the window revives by name.
- Attempted
USDA announced an environmental impact statement and rulemaking to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule across about 44.7 million acres, and said in terms that "[a]s directed by Executive Order 14153: Unleashing Alaska's Extraordinary Resource Potential, the proposed rule will expressly exclude the Tongass National Forest from the 2001 Roadless Rule".

Research notes
The Agriculture Department is doing something larger than the ask: rescinding the 2001 Roadless Rule nationally rather than reinstating the 2020 Alaska-specific exemption. Either way the Tongass would come out from under it — but the rule is a proposal.
Scan triage 2026-09-11. USDA extended comment on the 2026-08-20 proposal by 15 days, to 2026-10-06 (FR 2026-18648, 91 FR 57841). A comment extension is not a new instrument, so it adds no event. What would move this item is the final rule. The scan matched the extension to #1486 and #1750, not to this item.
