Accept all political ambassadors' resignations and reassess career ambassadors

Partially done

Printed page 174 6. Department of State

“It should both accept the resignations of all political ambassadors and quickly review and reassess all career ambassadors. This review should commence well before the new Administration’s first day.”

The second half of the ask was delivered, eleven months late; the first half is undocumented in allowlisted sources. In the week of 2025-12-21 the administration recalled nearly 30 career chiefs of mission to Washington, the State Department explaining that an ambassador is “a personal representative of the president” and that the President is entitled to officials who advance the America First agenda — a reassessment of career ambassadors in substance. It was not commenced “well before the new Administration's first day”: it came in the eleventh month of the second year. The acceptance of political ambassadors' resignations on 2025-01-20 left no allowlisted record — it is a pro forma step the Department does not announce — although all five posts tracked at #468 were vacant and refilled with new political appointees during 2025.

Research notes

  • No Primary record of the recall exists: the Department issued no press release (its 2025-2026 press index, 2,313 releases enumerated from state.gov’s own sitemaps, has nothing on it). The Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Ranking Member release is the allowlisted Primary that recites the action; NPR is the Secondary.
  • Leads (could not be opened): Washington Post, “Trump administration abruptly recalls scores of career ambassadors”, 2025-12-22, https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/12/22/trump-ambassadors-recalled/ ; The Hill, “Trump administration recalls numerous career ambassadors”, https://thehill.com/policy/international/5661158-trump-administration-recalls-ambassadors/
  • The Principal Officers and Chiefs of Mission database on history.state.gov, which would date every ambassadorial departure, has been frozen since 2024-03-14 by its own notice, so it cannot answer anything in this window.
  • Related: #467 (recall of hostile ambassadors — same instrument, different Quote), #468, #463.
