House higher education data at the Department of Labor
Printed page 338 11. Department of Education
“Data collection efforts in higher education should also be improved by housing higher education data at the Department of Labor.”
What has happened
- Not started
The higher education collections stay with the National Center for Education Statistics: the fiscal year 2027 Budget Request funds its Statistics account at $42.2 million precisely to keep running IPEDS and the Common Core of Data.
- Not started
The ED-DOL Postsecondary Education Partnership moves grant administration, not data. Its fact sheet lists the Office of Postsecondary Education competitions Labor will administer - TRIO, GEAR UP, GAANN, Title III - and says nothing about the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System or any other collection.

Research notes
- ED continued to run the higher education collections itself throughout the window: IPEDS paperwork notices on 2025-08-15 and 2025-11-13, and the Secretary’s 2025-08-07 direction to NCES to collect universities’ admissions race data.
- Negative search: no Federal Register document, interagency agreement fact sheet or ED press release in the window transfers a higher education data collection to the Department of Labor.
