Increase the number of Space Force general officer positions
Printed page 119 4. Department of Defense
“Increase the number of general officer positions to ensure the Space Force's ability to compete for resources on a common basis with the other services.”
What has happened
- Done
Congress increased the number. Section 502 of the FY2026 NDAA amends 10 U.S.C. 526(a) to raise the Space Force's authorized active-duty general officer strength from 21 to 24, taking the three billets from the Air Force (171 to 168) - a redistribution the section title states outright. Section 501 goes further, adding 10 U.S.C. 20110, which authorizes five more Space Force general officers serving in a Space Force active status but not on sustained duty, and amending 10 U.S.C. 525 and 526 so those officers fall outside the ordinary distribution limits. That is the ask enacted.

Research notes
Requires-Congress ask; done, because it was enacted. Both sections read in full in the enacted text.
- The Quote’s rationale is that the Space Force must “compete for resources on a common basis with the other services”; the enacted mechanism is a straight transfer of three flag billets from the Air Force plus a new category of five. No provision addresses the resource-competition rationale directly, but the ask itself - increase the number of general officer positions - is met.
