Instruct the FCC to strip PBS and NPR stations of NCE status
Printed page 248 8. Media Agencies (USAGM, CPB)
“NPR and PBS stations are in reality no longer noncommercial, as they run ads in everything but name for their sponsors. They are also noneducational. The next President should instruct the FCC to exclude the stations affiliated with PBS and NPR from the NCE denomination and the privileges that come with it.”
What has happened
- Not started
The FCC has not been instructed to strip PBS and NPR affiliates of noncommercial educational status, and has not done so. Federal Register full-text searches since 2025-01-20 for "noncommercial educational" combined with PBS return four documents, all routine television-allotment rulemakings for individual markets; the FCC's in-window NCE work is an application limit and eligibility restrictions for new NCE reserved-band FM translator applications (proposed 2026-02-26, adopted 2026-06-25), which is a filing-window rule of general application and says nothing about network affiliation. No presidential action directs the Commission. Executive Order 14290 reached federal grants to NPR and PBS, not their licenses, and the grant cut-off was permanently enjoined on 2026-03-31 (recorded at #638).
No action found yet. This entry is the starting point, not a finding.

Research notes
- Progress is measured on this ask: defunding the networks is a different instrument from reclassifying their stations’ licenses, and only the former happened.
- The FCC’s own docket pages were not opened; the Federal Register is the complete record of any rulemaking that would change NCE eligibility, and it carries none.
