Run all EPA tribal grants and tribal matters through the American Indian Office
Printed page 440 13. Environmental Protection Agency
“All EPA tribal grants and tribal matters should be run from this office as a one-stop-shop for all tribal affairs.”
What has happened
- Not started
Tribal grants are not run from one office. EPA's assistance agreements are administered by the Office of the Chief Grants Officer, which sits in the new Office of Finance and Administration and manages agency-wide grants policy, compliance and headquarters awards; the American Indian Environmental Office remains a division of the Office of International and Tribal Affairs, which describes itself as guiding an “Agency-wide effort” rather than running it. Regional offices continue to issue tribal permits and general assistance awards — the Federal Register carries a steady stream of EPA Region 8, Region 9 and Region 10 tribal actions through 2026. No one-stop shop was created.

What was searched, and what didn’t count as evidence
Research notes
- A search of EPA’s Federal Register documents among the federal records we keep and search, for “tribal”, “Indian” or “Alaska Native”, returns 30 documents in the window, all of them regional permits, general permits and implementation-plan actions issued by regions rather than by a central tribal office.
- A Federal Register full-text search of EPA documents for “American Indian Office” found none.
- The reorganization addendum’s only grants change is the move of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund oversight division under the Chief Grants Officer; tribal grants are not mentioned.
