The Census Bureau announced that it "has ceased collection and production of the Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections" and redirected the resources to two surveys that already carry the same data — the Annual Survey of State Government Finances and the Quarterly Summary of State & Local Tax Revenue — with the 2025 data released on 2026-04-15 as the last. That is duplication removed among the ongoing annual surveys, which the Quote names as one side of what it wants eliminated; the other side, the decennial operation, is untouched, and the Quote asks for the cut to be made through the decennial operational plan, which no document in the window revises. The notice, a "notice of determination" signed 2026-09-03, gives the Bureau's reason as "removing redundancies": the same estimates can be produced "without imposing an additional survey burden". It does not give the date collection stopped, so the event is dated at publication.
