Fentanyl was named the first drug policy priority in the administration's first-year statement. ONDCP's Statement of Drug Policy Priorities, released 3 April 2025, lists six priorities and puts "reduce the number of overdose fatalities, with a focus on fentanyl" at the top of the list, ahead of supply-chain security, border interdiction, prevention, treatment and research. The rest of the record matches: tariff orders aimed at the synthetic opioid supply chain from China, Mexico and Canada in the first fortnight, and EO 14367 of 15 December 2025 designating fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction.

The 2026 National Drug Control Strategy, released 4 May 2026, carries the same emphasis forward — “expands capacity for detection of illicit drugs”, “increases intelligence-driven interdictions of precursor chemicals”, “discussed emerging threat vectors for fentanyl and synthetic drugs” — and is described on #96 and #99.
