“Return to its primary mission: nonpartisan and basic science. SC’s mission should be international leadership in basic and early applied science and provision of world-leading facilities for this work.”

What has happened

  1. Attempted

EO 14303 directs agencies to restore Gold Standard Science: reproducible, transparent, subject to unbiased peer review, and not shaped by predetermined outcomes. It is the only instrument found bearing on the Quote's ask that the Office of Science return to nonpartisan basic science. No DOE or Office of Science implementing order, policy or Federal Register notice adopting the standard was found, and the Office of Science's stated mission is unchanged.

Research notes

Leveled with #930, which rests on the same executive order for EIA. Both stop at attempted: a government-wide directive with no agency-specific implementing action on the named object.

The Office of Science retains its facilities and basic-research mission and was joined under the Under Secretary for Science by new Offices of Fusion and of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum in the November 2025 realignment, which moves applied work out of SC rather than into it.
