Significantly increase Secret Service Uniformed Division staffing

Partially done

Printed page 158 5. Department of Homeland Security

“The Uniform Division (UD) of USSS requires a significant staffing increase.”

What has happened

  1. Partially done

Congress put money behind Secret Service staffing without mandating a Uniformed Division increase. Public Law 119-21 section 100057 appropriated $1.17 billion to the Director, available through 2029, for "additional United States Secret Service resources, including personnel, training facilities, programming, and technology", and authorized performance, retention and signing bonuses for any Secret Service "agent, officer, or analyst" - officer being the Uniformed Division's rank - with signing bonuses conditioned on a five-year commitment and retention bonuses on two. That is the resourcing half of the ask enacted. It is not `done`: the statute sets no Uniformed Division headcount, names the Division nowhere, and no allowlisted source reports what the Division's strength now is.

Research notes

A Requires-Congress ask, leveled the same way as #318 and #319 (ICE detention beds and officers): Congress funded but did not mandate, and no headcount is written down, so partial rather than done.

Recruitment context, not cited as Evidence for the Status: DHS announced on 2025-05-14 that the Service had received more than 22,000 applications between 2025-01-20 and 2025-05-01, a 200 percent increase year on year (https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/05/14/us-secret-service-applications-jump-200-president-trumps-inauguration, read 2026-08-28). Applications are not hires and the release does not break out the Uniformed Division.

Related: Public Law 119-21 section 90006 separately appropriated $300 million for reimbursing state and local protection costs at designated presidential residences.
