End RFE/RL's Hungarian-language service Szabad Európa

Done

Printed page 237 8. Media Agencies (USAGM, CPB)

“The recent addition of RFE/RL’s Hungarian-language service, Szabad Európa, falls outside the intended scope of RFE/RL’s charter by targeting a democratically elected, pro-American European and NATO ally.”

What has happened

  1. Done

Szabad Európa stopped. The service's own site carries a standing notice — “Tájékoztatjuk olvasóinkat, hogy az Egyesült Államok Globális Médiaügynöksége (USAGM) utasítására a Szabad Európa magyar szerkesztősége 2025. november 21-étől befejezi működését” (“we inform our readers that, on the instruction of the United States Agency for Global Media, the Hungarian editorial staff of Szabad Európa ceases operations from 21 November 2025”) — above an invitation to browse the archive. The site is now an archive and not a service: nothing on the front page is dated later than 19 November 2025. The Quote asks that this service be ended because it targets a NATO ally, and it was ended, by USAGM's instruction, which is this administration acting. RFE/RL's own service directory, read the same day, corroborates the state: it counts 24 languages across 18 countries and lists no Hungarian service and no Hungary among them.

Research log

What was searched, and what didn’t count as evidence

Research notes

  • One search covered the USAGM service and internal-management asks that have no instrument on a source we accept as Evidence: #615, #617, #619, #620, #624, #626, #627, #630, #632 and #633. This item has since left that group: it now has its own record.
  • Corrected 2026-09-06. The 2026-08-28 not started was replaced, not followed by a new entry, because a later finding replaces the earlier one it corrects — it said “no allowlisted record shows Szabad Europa closed”, which was true of the sources we then accepted and false about the world. What opened the record was a rule settled on review, 2026-09-06: an actor’s own account of its own conduct is a Primary source.
  • Where the answer was, and was not. rferl.org’s English newsroom carries nothing: its site search, tested first with a nonsense term that returned 0, returns exactly one match for “Szabad Europa” and it is the 2020 relaunch article. www.rferl.org/hungary no longer exists. usagm.gov carries nothing: its list of posts (3,618 URLs, across both sitemap files) has no item on the Hungarian service, and the one press release dated 2025-11-21 is about Radio Free Asia’s equipment disposals — a coincidence of date, named here so it is not mistaken for the notice. usagm.gov/networks/rferl/ still offers “RFERL Hungarian” in an “Explore the RFE/RL websites” dropdown, which is a stale menu beside a page that also still offers RFERL Bulgarian — not a statement that the service exists.
  • The closure notice is dated by the date inside it, not by the day we read it: the notice states its own effective date, which is the event. The service directory is undated, so it is dated the day we looked, and it evidences a state (“no Hungarian service on the day we looked”), not the event.
  • szabadeuropa.hu was added to the list of sources we accept for this item.
